Are Flushable Wipes Really Safe to Flush?

Most people in Salt Lake City, Utah, prefer the soft touch of wet wipes over toilet paper. And who can blame them? However, are flushable wet wipes safe to flush? Even though many wet wipes claim to be, one can never be too sure.

The Breakdown

Although flushable wipes are labelled as “flushable” or “septic-safe”, they aren’t. While these wet wipes do break down, they take a lot longer than toilet paper. Consequently, this will clog your pipes a lot more. Now the real question is, “Are these wonderful wipes worth the plumbing pain?”.

Which “Flushable” Products Cause Blockages?

So many! A few commonly are:

  • Thick toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Cotton swabs
  • Dental floss
  • Sanitary pads
  • Toilet cleaning pads

The combination of flushing any of these items along with wet wipes is what we plumbers call “ragging”. If your toilet becomes clogged up because of this, call us immediately for emergency plumbing services.

Which Products are Safe to Flush?

Manufacturers claim that certain products like “flushable” wet wipes are safe to flush. But our front-line experience in plumbing has revealed the opposite. Items like wet wipes increase the risk of a clogged sewer line and require more frequent septic tank pumping.

You should ONLY flush toilet paper.
