Can Coffee Grounds Go Down the Sink?

You might counter, “But I pour them down the sink drain every day, and I’ve never had a clogged drain!” Coffee grounds are created from almost-rock-hard coffee beans that have been ground and brewed. You wouldn’t crush the pit of a peach, apricot, or nectarine of similar hardness since it wouldn’t break down like other foods, and the same is true of coffee beans!

We don’t blame you if you grind coffee beans in the garbage disposal because it looks to be the most efficient and convenient approach. Anyone who has ever had to wipe up spilled coffee grounds in the garbage can understands why. Because coffee grounds do not dissolve in water, they cluster together instead of grinding up and dissolving like other materials in a garbage disposal. Over time, the grounds can form a clump and pack the drain until it clogs.

What to Do with Coffee Grounds

So, what do you do with coffee grounds if you can’t throw them down the drain? Of course, you could throw them away, but we encourage that you give these creative ideas a try!

• Coffee grounds can be used to fertilize your garden because they contain essential nutrients for plant growth.

• Coffee grounds not only fertilize gardens but also absorb contaminants in the soil, notably heavy metals.

• Coffee grounds are said to attract worms, which help gardens develop.

• Coffee grounds can be used as fertilizer by distributing them over your plants; coffee grinds can be composted and utilized at a later date.

• Coffee grinds are good insect repellents whether placed in bowls or sprinkled across the area where you want to repel insects.

• Bathe your dog or cat and then rub coffee grounds into their fur to get rid of fleas. As normal, rinse and dry them.

• Used coffee grounds, like baking soda, can aid with odor removal. Put them in a bowl and place them in the refrigerator to do the work for you!

• Use coffee grounds and coconut oil to make a great face or body scrub, or use it to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
