Sewer lines can get clogged easily, the main problem is that it will not be detected until it has caused extensive damage inside the home.

Getting a clogged drain or toilet

These are the most common signs of a sewer line clog. You might want to call a plumber if water starts to back out of the drain or if there is a gurgling sound coming out of it.

If the drain or toilets starts to percolate especially after using the washing machine, it is possible that the clog is in the main sewer line or in one of the secondary lines.

Tree roots are one of the main causes for clogged sewers especially if you have an old home with old trees. In new homes, the clogs are usually caused by toilet paper or feminine hygiene products. Tree roots can go into the drain, causing them to break down later on. There are also instances when older pipes have been crushed by trees in the homeowner’s yard.

Releasing pressure

If you suspect that you have a blocked sewer, you might want to shut off the water at the source. If you can go to the sewer cleanout line, you can remove the cap to send water outside the house. You should also avoid using drain cleaners.

If you want to clean the drain to help you avoid getting a clog, you can fill your sink to the top and drain them at least once a month. The water pressure that is created can help you get rid of any waste that is in the line.

You might need to hire a backhoe to excavate the ground to dig up the sewer pipe. If the issue is not fixed, the sewer line can cause raw sewage to come out of the drains, this can cause extensive damage and expensive repairs.

Get a camera inspection

Sewer line cleaning companies can use a drain snake or auger to clear the clog.  If it is not possible to clear the clog this way, the company might recommend that you get a camera inspection. Experts recommend that you stay away from companies who will opt to do the expensive camera inspection first before using the drain snake.
