One of the most common ways to heat a home or business in Salt Lake City and Park City is with natural gas. Gas is relatively safe, but occasionally it can create dangerous situations. If you suspect there is a gas leak in your home, it is important that you follow these guidelines and seek immediate help:

  • Do not locate the leak on your own. Leaking gas causes a fire risk, creating an unstable and potentially very dangerous situation. You should let a professional find the leak and make the necessary repairs.
  • Leave the area immediately and call your utility company as soon as you detect a leak. It is in the best interest of your home and your safety to have a professional inspect the problem. If your utility company is unavailable, you should contact your local fire department. Try not to worry about any resulting costs; in most cases, there will be no charge.
  • If you suspect a leak, refrain from operating any electrical devices and appliances. Items such as light switches, cell phones, and garage doors can cause sparks or static electricity which can result in ignited gas.
  • Do not smoke or light anything in or near your home if you suspect a gas leak.
  • Do not attempt to shut off any gas lines or gas-using appliances. This task is best left to a professional technician or HVAC specialist. If shut off incorrectly, there is a risk of sparks which could ignite the leaked gas. Additionally, you could inadvertently damage the gas lines or appliances.
  • It is strongly advised that you do not start any vehicle in your garage or anywhere near your home. A car, like other devices, could cause sparks and heat that lead to ignited gas.

After the leak has been located and the gas has been turned off,  you should hire a professional technician to fix the leak. Depending on the type and location of the leak, you may need a different specialist. Pipe-based repairs can be performed by a licensed plumber. If an appliance has the leak, you should contact an appliance repair professional. On the other hand, if the leak is coming from your heating equipment you should reach out to your HVAC company.
