Blog highlights:

  • During an emergency toilet overflow, you need to know exactly what to do while you are waiting for help to arrive.
  • You need to turn-off the toilet’s water valve at the base, or rig the toilet tank floater to make sure that the water stops flowing
  • The water on the floor has to be drained or removed right away.
  • Anything that has come into contact with the toilet water has to be cleaned and disinfected.
  • You need to use a toilet plunger or snake if there are clogs in the drain, you can use a sink plunger if you do not have any of these tools.
  • You need to clear away small items that are placed near the toilet or on top of the toilet tank so that you can avoid getting your toilet clogged by a foreign object.

If the toilet overflows unexpectedly, you will need to do something that will help you deal with the problem until the plumber arrives.

Plumbers are very much in demand especially in areas where there is a dense population of homeowners and residents.

Even online, thousands of people are searching for local plumbers who can cater to their needs. While there are a lot of professional plumbers out there who can easily help you. You need to understand that there are ways for you to address this overflow emergency while waiting. You should also know the fact that the plumber might take a few hours, even a few days just to be able to deal with your problem depending on the plumber’s schedule and location.

The very first thing that you need to do is to try to locate the toilet’s shut off valve. Located near its base, you need to turn it until the water stops flowing. If the toilet does not have it, you can open the tank and maneuver the float so that it will no longer allow any water to go into the tank.

As soon as the flow of water has been stopped, the next thing you need to do is to try to remove the water on the floor. You should let it drain or you should try to use paper towels to dry the floor right away. You can use a Shop-vac to help you deal with large spills; you can also use it to help you get rid of the water on the carpet or rugs. All the surfaces that have come in contact with the toilet water should be properly cleaned and disinfected.

If you suspect that a clog is causing the problem, you need to get a toilet plunger and try to dislodge it yourself. A sink plunger may work but it will not be as effective. A plumbing snake will also be very handy for this situation.

If you do not have any of these tools, and if you have a lot of time, you can try putting 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar into the toilet. You need to let this solution sit inside the toilet for at least 8 hours. The mixture of these two chemicals will hopefully help breakdown the clog inside the drain.

If you know for a fact that there is a foreign object clogging the drain, you can wear rubber gloves and try to remove the object on your own.

To prevent toilet clogs, you need to do the following:

  • Try to use less toilet paper; if you do need to use more, you need to flush the toilet multiple times just to make sure that it goes down the drain properly.
  • Do not flush feminine products down the toilet even if it says that it is flushable. You should try to throw them in the nearest trash receptacle instead.
  • The spaces near the toilet and at the top of the tank should be cleared of any small items that can easily fall off and go down into the drain. These objects might fall in and get accidentally flushed. This is a sure way to create a clog. By keeping small objects away from these areas, you are decreasing the chance of you having to deal with clogs caused by foreign objects.
