If you live in Salt Lake City or Park City, you’re pretty much guaranteed a cold, snowy winter. Likely, you know how to prepare your home or office plumbing for the winter, but it’s also important to know what to expect when spring finally comes. As the weather becomes more pleasant and warmer rains begin to fall, you should inspect your plumbing and pipes for damages they may have sustained during the winter months.

Cold temperatures can often cause problems with your plumbing system. Pipes can crack and drains can clog, leading to leaks and damage. Know how to identify problem areas and what you should do if you discover an issue. Let’s start with the bathroom and kitchen plumbing, two of the most important areas in your home.

You should check your toilet. The best way to check your toilet is to add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. Wait 30 minutes. If the color seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak.

Additionally, make sure the flush handle is working properly. If you discover leaks or notice anything that’s not working as it should, call your plumber immediately. Putting off these types of problems can lead to further damage in the future.

It’s imperative that you check your faucets in your bathrooms and kitchen. Look for leaks and drips. While a small drip may seem harmless, it can lead to ruined fixtures, mildew, and even mold.

Under your sinks and water closets, there are different water supply valves. These valves can easily become clogged and dirty. Rust, hardened caulk, and mineral deposits built up in the valves overtime which can lead to issues. One of the best ways to avoid future problems is to rotate the valves. Spring is a great time to check these valves and rotate or replace them if necessary.

You should also spend some time cleaning and preparing your drains. Overtime dirt, hair, and even soap can clog them and reduce their efficiency. A simple and easy solution is to install drain strainers which can prevent build up of foreign objects in your drain.

Some of these things you can do on your own; however, if you feel uncomfortable or are not sure what to do, don’t hesitate to hire a professional.
