The Biggest Factors that Affect Water Quality

Water is the most crucial element of life, but with the intensification of agriculture, population growth, and toxicities, water sources are being heavily contaminated everywhere, including the Salt Lake City.

There are some parts of the country, where the tap water is nice and clean, but we cannot ignore what happened in Flint, Michigan.

In Michigan, the water crisis started in 2014 and continued until 2019. The water sources were infected with legionella bacteria and lead. During this period, more than 12,000 children were exposed to high levels of lead.

They say we should learn from our past mistakes, and so it is time to identify the factors that can ruin the quality of drinking water and how it can be prevented:

Factors Causing Water Contamination

Water bodies can be contaminated by a variety of elements. Some of them are mentioned down here:

  • Sedimentation
  • Dissolved oxygen
  • Petroleum
  • Toxic chemicals
  • Radioactive Substance
  • Thermal Pollutant
  • Plant Nutrients
  • Domestic Sewage
  • Erosion
  • Household cleaners
  • Fluoride

Depending on their source, these pollutants are categorized as manmade and natural pollutants. Sedimentation, erosion, runoff, and fluoride are among the natural ones, and the rest of them falls under the man-made ones. The worrying part is humans are acting as a catalyst to even the natural pollutants.

Water pollution may not damage your health immediately, but it has some very bad effects in the long term. For instance, heavy metals released by industrial waste can cause long-term damage to the underwater ecosystem and those who consume seafood.

Microbial pollutants like sewage water have been responsible for pandemics like cholera and typhoid fever. It was also discovered that exposure to contaminated water leads to birth time defects and is the main cause of infant mortality.

Now is the time to check our doings and determine a way to curb the rising water pollutants. After all, water is the necessity of life and not just us, even our machines require safe water. E.g., softened water increases the efficiency and longevity of dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters.

To celebrate the Nation Water Quality Month, Mr. Rotter listed some efficient ways to improve water qualities:

Filtration methods

Filtration is the oldest water purification technique, and it works every time. Here are two ways you can try water filtration at home:

  • Point-of-entry: Point-of-entry filtration systems are installed right at the source. These systems are also known as “Whole House Water Filters.” This technique comprises systems like water softeners and aerators. The treated water is delivered to all the faucets be it in the sink, showers, bath, or dishwasher.
  • Point-of-use: Point-of-use filtration systems are simple to install and easy to use. And, the four most popular PoU filtration solutions are Under-the-sink systems, Counter-top systems, Faucet-mounted filters, and Tabletop pitchers. While most PoU filters make claims of pure water, it is the one with osmosis that does the job.

Water filters tend to be space-consuming and heavy, but the table Pitchers are a convenient and portable alternative. Whether you are living in small apartments or moving into a college dorm, this is the most cost-effective way to remove contaminants from your drinking water.
